I wanted to create a tactile, three dimensional piece utilising intricate hand knotting and freestyle weaving techniques.
My inspiration for this piece was the power and undulations and texture of the natural world around me whilst working in my garden studio during a unusually stormy season.. The piece starts with a very soft palette and evolves to a darker precipitation moving downwards as the weather and cloud formation around me changed. Natural fibres and textiles give this piece a distinctly raw organic feel, to depict fluidity and movement.
I’ve hand sourced the softest alpaca, hand-spun wools from the Scottish highlands, combed top wools from Devon hand dyed with blackberries and rhubarb leaves, cotton rope, hemp rope, jute, recycled cottons, raffia, linen, and recycled Sari silks,
This is a unique one of a kind piece and is hung on drift wood collected from the Cornish coast.
I’d given myself no time restraints on this work and it’s been a real progression in my creative journey.
